Competitiveness of the economy of a country or region is determined by the extent of its ability to implement innovations. Not every industry, however, is a strong industry in terms of innovations, an innovative driving force; therefore there seems to beevidence to suggest that the level of innovation and consequently the level of economic competitiveness correspond to certain industrial structure, specifically to the dominance of the relevant "drivers". The aim of this paper is to compare the selectedcountries by their level of innovation, using the results from the Global Innovation Index from the point of view of the industry structure and evolution of gross domestic product per capita; to try to find an answer to the question of whether highly innovative countries differ in the industrial structure from innovation "retarded" countries and simultaneously to evaluate the position of the Czech Republic.
