Photosynthetic complex LH4 - absorption and steady state fluorescence spectra
Original language description
Solar energy is the primary source of energy on Earth. The effective recovery, processing and storage of solar energy is a major challenge but this energy would be a perfect answer to current energy needs. The perfect solution of above mentioned problemwould be to get the energy produced by photosynthesis in plants or bacteria directly or to be able to copy the process of photosynthesis. For copying the process of photosynthesis it is necessary to know in great details the structure and properties of organisms in which photosynthesis takes place. Photosynthesis starts with the absorption of a solar photon by one of the light-harvesting (LH) pigment protein complexes and transfering the excitation energy to the reaction center where a charge separationis initiated. The geometric structure of such LH complexes is known in great details, e.g. for the LH2 and LH4 complexes of purple bacteria. The properties of such complexes are strongly influenced by their interactions with environment.
