EV Battery Design Trade-offs: Energy Efficiency, Echelonization, and Circular Economy

  • Original language description

The rapid expansion of battery technology, driven by the electrification of mobility and energy storage systems, necessitates a strategic approach to design, manufacturing, and lifecycle management. This study evaluates the trade-offs between different battery cell formats-cylindrical, prismatic, pouch, and sheet-through the lens of the circular economy, emphasizing energy efficiency, echelonization, and sustainability. We analyse how battery design choices impact recyclability, serviceability, and second-life applications, considering the implications of integrated versus modular architectures. Special attention is given to standardization efforts that enhance traceability and optimize reverse logistics, facilitating the recovery and repurposing of battery components. Our findings highlight the potential of modular and swappable battery solutions, such as Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS), to improve lifecycle sustainability while addressing economic and environmental challenges. The study underscores the necessity of balancing technical efficiency with circular economy principles to support a more sustainable and resilient battery supply chain.
