THEORETICAL READINESS OF STUDENTS OF NON-MEDICAL HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONS IN THE CARE FOR A MUSLIM WOMAN IN GYNECOLOGY AND OBSTETRICS
Original language description
Members of the Islamic community are a very specific minority in the Czech Republic. Religious regulations and their faith govern their everyday life in health and in sickness. The literature review suggests the need for physicians and non-medical health care professionals to be knowledgeable in the specifics of providing culturally competent care and communication with the clients of the Islamic community. Only a health care professional who is sufficiently equipped with knowledge about the particularities of individual religious and cultural model can establish a relationship based on mutual respect and understanding with his or her Muslim patient/client. The research focused on the description of the main cultural and religious particularities in nursing care delivered to pregnant, nursing and breastfeeding Muslim women. Subsequently, the theoretical knowledge on this subject was verified on the sample of respondents – third-year students of the selected bachelor study programs (Midwifery, Nursing, Paramedic). The research revealed poor theoretical knowledge of future health care professionals. However, it needs to be emphasized that the study was based on a small sample of participants (this is the main limitation of this research).
