System Requirements of Software-Defined IoT Networks for Critical Infrastructure

  • Original language description

Critical infrastructure is becoming dependent on Internet of Things (IoT) sensors. These sensors measure various physical values and send them via a communication network in the form of electronic data. Data is then used by a management center for detailed analysis and system control. This technology can be used in various scenarios, from smart grid networks to autonomous vehicles. All these scenarios require innovative technologies in order to stay productive, efficient and resource friendly. These technologies include software-defined networks, which support network programmability. This allows rapid deployment of innovative applications, which can be dynamically adjusted as needs of the network change. The adjustment requires only a software modification which provides scalability of the solution. The key part of such a solution is quality of the control software application and the system configuration. Currently, there is no unified methodology which would summarize the best practices for developing such a system. This paper provides a list of system requirements for software-defined IoT networks for critical infrastructure. This list is one of the key phases in every system development process. Use of the list can help with development of high quality, scalable, efficient, and secure SDN systems, which can be deployed in critical infrastructure scenarios.
