Enhancing BPMN Simulation through CPN-Light and Modern Tooling

  • Original language description

This paper presents a continuation of previous research on the transformation of BPMN models into Colored Petri Nets (CPNs). The prior study introduced the PetriBPMN methodology, which automated the conversion of BPMN-Light models into Colored Petri Nets (CPNs), facilitating process simulations. Building on this foundation, the current research introduces a new subclass of CPN, termed CPN-Light, aimed at enhancing simulation capabilities while maintaining modeling simplicity. CPN-Light introduces a developer-friendly syntax inspired by C#, simplifying formal modeling without compromising analytical depth.Additionally, the paper introduces the ongoing development of a new tool intended as a modern alternative to CPN Tools, which is now out of support, ensuring continued accessibility and usability for process modeling and simulation. The new simulation tool will complement this by enabling simulation, visualization, and debugging of transformed models. Furthermore, BPMN-light models can be annotated and observed directly through synchronized CPN-Light visualizations, significantly enhancing process transparency and simulation feedback.
