The effect of reservoirs on the regional and local flood protection at the Morava river.
Original language description
Severe floods occurred in July 1997 in the Moravian part of the Czech Republic with further flood wave propagation to Poland, Germany, Slovakia, Austria and Hungary. 25 losses of human life and about 2 billion USD material losses were caused by the extreme flood wave in 1997, which at some river reaches exceeded 500-year flood discharge. Flood routing strongly depends on the manipulation at existing reservoirs and polders. The paper shows the difference between flood routing in two principal subcatchmennts of Morava river and emphasizes the effect of reservoirs on the regional and local flood protection.
