Theoretical Analysis of Mechanical Load Induced Micro-crack Generation in Concruction Materials

  • Original language description

If a solid is loaded by a kind of mechanical stress (compression, tensile stress, bending, mechanical shocks, shearing, notching, material fibre breakage etc.), cracks are generated in it which in turn results in a non-uniform distribution of the electric charge over the crack walls, which are getting charged by opposite sign charges. In consequence of the charge oscillatory motion corresponding to the acoustic emission (AE) taking place simultaneously with the crack generation, a time-varying electricdipole is formed. In this way, the cracks make up the source of an electromagnetic field, which can be detected in both the material neighbourhood and, in some cases, a remote region.
