Stochastic modeling of multi-filament yarns. I. Random properties within the cross-section and size effect

  • Original language description

The paper presents a thorough study of sources ofrandomness/disorder in multi-filament yarns that are relevant fortheir performance in textile reinforced concrete. For the analysis ofbundles with infinite number of fibers we use a continuousanalytical model with refined kinematic hypothesis. In parallel, weapply a more general discrete numerical bundle model covering thecases of finite number of fibers and spatial variations of materialproperties. The considered distributions of material propertiesincluude variations of parameters (local stiffness and strength)both from filament to filament and over thelength of each filament. In the present paper, we study theinfluence of variations in filament properties across the bundle. Inthe companion paper PartII, the variations ofmaterial properties over the length are considered. Both papersprovide the basis for correct interpretation of the data obtainedfrom the tensile test on multi-filament yarn with varied specimen length.
