This paper presents a pilot study of the stress distribution and crack propagation in specimens used in tests in which the quasi-brittle material failure is investigated by means of electromagnetic emission. The main attetion is paid to testing configurations in which the failure is caused by lateral tension induced in the specimen by compressive loading in the testing machine.
