    This paper presents a pilot study of the stress distribution and crack propagation in specimens used in tests in which the quasi-brittle material failure is investigated by means of acoustic and electromagnetic emission. The main attention is paid to testing configurations in which the failure is caused by lateral tension induced in the specimen by compressive loading in the testing machine. Three-dimensional analysis was performed by using non-linear FEM code ATENA based on fracture mechanical and plassticity approach that enables to study progressive failure of tested specimen.
