Internal erosion incidents - cases from the Czech Republic
Original language description
In the paper several examples of incidents caused by internal erosion at dams and levees in the Czech Republic are described. The disastrous failure of the Bila Desna Dam happened in September 1916. The failure caused the loss of 62 human lives and extensive material losses in the village of Bila Desna located downstream of the dam. Piping processes at the Mostiste rockfill dam were monitored from the year 1996, and the dam was repaired in 2005 and 2006. The failures of small dams in the south of Bohemia during the 2002 flood were partially caused by the erosion of the dam material into cracked wooden pipes, which caused subsidence of dam crests. The small Merin and Luka dams failed due to piping initiated by frost action along the emergency spillway side wall. The statistics of levee failures in the Morava river catchment in the period from 1960 to 2004 shows that more than 11 % of levee failures were due to internal erosion. Examples of two incidents at the Horka and Kvasice levees a
