Fracture properties values of natural and artificial sandstones
Original language description
Comparison of values of mechanical and fracture properties (compressive and bending strengths, modulus of elasticity, effective fracture toughness, and specific fracture energy) of natural and artificial sandstones are introduced. The artificial sandstones were prepared with respect to approximate properties of natural ones. The artificial sandstones were formed using the alkali activation of metakaolin and silica as aggregate. Effective fracture toughness was measured using the Effective Crack Model, which combines the linear elastic fracture mechanics and effective crack length approaches. A three-point bending (3PB) test of a specimen with a central edge notch is used in this approach. The nominal size of the notched beams was 40_40_160 mm, the depth of the central edge notch is about 1/3 of the depth of the specimen, and the loaded span is equal to 120 mm. A continuous record of the load deflection (Fd) diagram was obtained for computation of this value. An estimation of the fractu
