Beams of Monosymmetric Thin-Walled Steel Cross-Sections Loaded Perpendicularly to the Axis of Symmetry in the Light of the EN 1993 Approach
Original language description
The beams of monosymmetric thin-walled steel cross-sections (for instance channel sections) have been widely used in civil engineering, e. g. as wall substructure beams or purlins in bending, compression and torsion (in case they are loaded eccentrically to the cross-section shear centre). Due to slenderness of the beam of thin-walled cross-section, the flexural or lateral torsional buckling might occur. The applicability of procedures given in the EN 1993-1-1 standard related to lateral torsional buckling is limited to cases when the vector of transverse loads goes through the cross-section shear centre. According to the background document to this standard, the applicability of lateral torsional buckling curves for other cases should be verified by experiments. It is the problem of torsion caused by certain eccentricity to the shear centre and bending which might be accompanied by lateral torsional buckling. This paper focuses on investigation of applicability of lateral torsional buckling curves by means of numerical models effected by finite element method based software. A study considering various values of slenderness of selected channel section loaded perpendicularly to its axis of symmetry is performed and the results are evaluated. The analysis takes into account different values of initial imperfections and thereby the applicability of each lateral buckling curve is studied.
