FEM modeling of FRP-confined circular concrete columns

  • Original language description

In the last decades, the analysis and application of FRP confinement is subject of interest in both retrofit of existing reinforced concrete columns and in the construction of concrete - filled FRP tubes as earthquake-resistant columns in new construction. Many models and standards are suggested for estimating the compressive strength and strain enhancement provided by the FRP wrap but, there is still lacking to identify adequately accurate model to use in design purpose. Finite element method is widely used method to understand and to simulate the behavior of FRP-confined circular reinforced concrete columns. A number of studies were conducted to evaluate the effect of FRP-confinement on concrete columns, taking into account the mechanism of FRP and stresses in concrete core. There are many different methods to model the effect of confinement. In this paper, finite element models of FRP-confined circular column will be developed and described. An iteration procedure is proposed based on the outcome of 3D FEM analysis using ATENA 3D software. The aim of these simulations is to determine the load curve of confined element with respect to its gradual loading and slenderness. The paper provides a comparison of the results of different method of modeling, their advantages and disadvantages.
