On problem of stabilization of steel beams of thin-walled cross-sections by sandwich panels

  • Original language description

Roof or wall cladding consists of steel beams of thin-walled cross-sections and sandwich panels in many cases. The panels not only cover large spaces but also contribute to buckling resistance of supporting beams. It is particularly appreciable if metal beams of slender thin-walled cross-sections are utilized. This positive influence of planar members is possible due to their certain shear and rotational stiffness. They are fastened mostly at the top flange of the supporting beam. There is a lot of factors independent on each other affecting overall performance of such constructional systems, e.g. properties of fasteners or way of load transfer from planar member to the beam. It is a problem of bound deformation of the beam along the span. Behavior of referred systems is very complex and its description is difficult. Due to number of factors a pure analytical solution is not possible. Influence of some factors might be efficiently evaluated using numerical or experimental analysis. This paper deals with numerical modeling of steel beams of thin-walled sections in bending stabilized by sandwich panels. Influence of sandwich panel thickness on their stabilizing effect is investigated using numerical models based on finite element method. Selected substantial results are summarized.
