HEAT TREATMENT OF HIGHT PERFORMANCE CONCRETE TO REDUCE ITS SUSCEPTIBILITY TO EXPLOSIVE SPALLING
Original language description
High performance concrete (HPC) is nowadays often used as buildings material for constructions with high level of complexity. The compressive strength of HPC is high because of its dense microstructure which has almost no capillary pores. If the HPC concrete is exposed to high temperatures, for example fire, there are no outlets for the entrapped water vapor. The surface layers of the elements are therefore very susceptible to explosive spalling. Due to the spalling reactions the constructions are loosing load bearing concrete cross sections and the reinforcement becomes directly exposed to the flames and softens. Thus, the elements may collapse earlier than with intact cover. This study deals with heat treatment of HPC as to enlarge pores and generatemicrocracks, which in case of fire may form a porous network for the liberation of the water vapor and avoid high vapor pressure, which could cause explosive spalling. In this study the specimens were heated with low rates up to maximum
