Discussion on the critical hydraulic gradient for uniform homogeneous glass beads
Original language description
Dams, levees and flood-walls built on permeable sandy soil can be susceptible to failure due to seepage under the structure. In uniform soils the initiation phase of progressive internal erosion usually starts with fluidization. The magnitude of volume forces is governed by the local hydraulic gradient at the exit of the seepage downstream of the structure. Extensive experimental research on uniform glass beads was carried out at the Laboratory of Hydraulic Research at Brno University of Technology (BUT) to estimate the critical hydraulic gradient, J C. In this paper, experimentally obtained J C values are compared with values obtained from formulae proposed by other authors. Other factors affecting J C, such as grain size and compaction rate, are discussed
