Evaluation of the stability of slopes of dams of small water reservoirs in relation to the requirements of CSN 75 2410

  • Original language description

Small reservoirs are defined by the Czech national standard ČSN 75 2410 as a schemes with dam height smaller than 9 m and with reservoir capacity less than 2 million m3. In some cases designing and assessing a slope stability of small embankment dams isnot carried out using slope stability calculations. For these dams standard ČSN 75 2410 recommends the maximal upstream and downstream slopes based on embankment material classification. Even so the margin of safety of these recommended slopes is not assigned. Aim of this paper is to evaluate safety reserve included in recommended slopes for the most frequent homogenous embankment dams. The safety factors for individual variants were evaluated using the PLAXIS 2D and the GeoStudio Slope/W software. Theresults indicated reasonable safety reserve in case of embankments provided with toe drain, much less safety was achieved in cases with small dams with phreatic surface reaching the downstream slope. Rather small safety factors for upstre
