Identification of parameters for DEM model of railway ballast
Original language description
The railway ballast is an important component of the railway structure that affects service life of the whole railway track and quality of railway traffic. Many different experiments and in-situ measurements are performed in order to understand the railway ballast behaviour. However, the experiments and measurements are often expensive and limited, therefore the need of computer simulation arises. Due to the discrete character of railway ballast it is advantageous to simulate it by discrete elements like spheres, ellipsoids, tetrahedrons, polyhedrons, etc. using well established Discrete Element Method (DEM). To achieve correspondence between the real and the computer experiments it is necessary to identify model parameters. The contribution is focusedon identification of the two fundamental parameters of the DEM ballast model, particularly the normal contact stiffness and the angle of internal friction. These are identified form simulation of Oedometric test and Composite Element Tes
