Resistance of asphalt binders to formation of frost cracks

  • Original language description

Monitoring low-temperature properties of asphalt binders is fundamental for determining resistance of asphalt pavements to formation of frost cracks. This paper compares the properties of paving bitumen, two bitumens modified with various amount of crumb rub-ber (CRmB) and three bitumens with variable amount of SBS. Also a simulation of short-term and long-term ageing was performed in order to determine the resistance of these bi-tumens to the ageing process. The individual bitumens, including the effect of ageing, were compared using empirical tests, in particular the needle penetration test and the sof-tening point and also the relaxation test performed using dynamic shear rheometer (DSR). The results of this test for the individual bitumens were subsequently correlated with the results from bending beam rheometer (BBR). A strong correlation was found between the flexural creep stiffness and the maximum shear stress in DSR, between the m value and the area of the relaxation curve, and between the m-value and the residual shear stress.
