Utilization of waste glass in polymer concrete
Original language description
Polymer concrete, known also as resin concrete, is a constructional composite, a variation of concrete, in which traditional binder - cement, has been completely replaced with synthetic resins with a hardening agent. Sand-and-gravel and quartz powder is used as commercially and commonly used filler. The weakest part of standard concrete - the hydraulic mineral binder was eliminated from polymer concrete. High adhesion of of binder-and-aggregate is ensured by polymer resin, for instance by epoxy resin, that is the most widely used polymer binder. Using epoxy resins instead of traditionally used binder-cement help to obtain a series of interesting properties such as high chemical resistance to many agressive chemical substances. The mechanical properties as the tensile strength of hardened resin binder is much higher, and the compressive strength approaching to the strength of the rocks from which the aggregate is commonly obtained. Due to its properties, polymer concrete is nowadays mainly used for production of prefabricated products for bridge and linear drainage systems (drainage silt boxes, manhole covers). Next utilization of polymer concrete with epoxy resin are flooring systems and repairing of damaged concrete, because of minimal shrinkage of solvent free epoxy resin and excellent adhesion to concrete. While the use of glass powder along with reinforcing fillers in the processing of polymers enhances the mechanical properties of polymers, it also reduces production costs.
