Impact of Buildings's Lifespan on the Life Cycle Assessment

  • Original language description

Currently it is common that published Life Cycle Assessment studies of buildings differ in the estimates of lifespan of individual building structures. This parameter is crucial for evaluation of environmental impacts related to the operational phase of a building's life cycle – total energy consumption, repair and maintenance scenarios, etc. Therefore, comparison of various studies with different life spans is complicated. Commonly, lifespan of buildings is estimated between 30 and 50 years. But in reality there are far older buildings that still serve their original purpose. This paper deals with the influence the building’s lifespan has on the total environmental impacts. Wooden (made of Structural Insulated Panels) detached house representing common contemporary building of this category in Czech Republic is assessed. Service life of the building is set between 50 and 100 years. Four scenarios are considered. These take into both errors of the assessors (neglecting replacement of materials or building’s occupancy) and the impact of the varying lifespan on the results. The results are presented in 5-year steps.
