Laboratory determination of shear strength of rock
Original language description
The presented contribution is focused on shear failure as the most typical mode of rock or rock mass failure in geomechanics. It is necessary to distinguish between shear strength of rock and rock mass, where the second one is significantly determined by joints properties. In principal, two types of laboratory tests for investigation of shear strength can be utilized: triaxial test for intact rock and direct shear box test for joints. Several possible procedures for both types of tests are described in the contribution with examples of results. Comparison of the procedures is summarized and notice of appropriate choice of testing method to particular engineering problem is given as conclusion.
