Fracture Behaviour of Geopolymer Mortars Reinforced with Hemp Fibres

  • Original language description

The main attention is focused on the evaluation of three-point bending fracture tests of prismatic specimens with an initial central edge notch made of selected fly ash based geopolymer mortars reinforced with hemp fibres. The design of selected mix composition was performed based on the preliminary research work which included the analysis of different fly ash types and quantities, as well as the different content of hemp fibres influence on the compressive and flexural strength. The load vs. displacement (deflection in the middle of span length) diagrams were recorded during the fracture tests and discussed. Mechanical fracture parameters were subsequently evaluated using the Effective Crack Model and Work-of-fracture method: modulus of elasticity, effective fracture toughness and specific fracture energy. The obtained results show that the fracture parameters increased with addition of hemp fibres up to 10% in case of effective fracture toughness and more than threefold in the case of specific fracture energy. It seems that the obtained results comply with the assumptions that the addition of fibres into alkali activated matrix should lead to reduce cracking tendency and improve tensile properties of these materials. On the other hand, it is necessary to perform more tests or determine other parameters to affirm these pilot results.
