The usage of the acoustic emission method for the experimental determination of the damage progress in the fine-grained cementitious composites subjected to loading
Original language description
The paper deals with the experimental analysis aimed at the monitoring of the deterioration mechanism of the internal structure of fine-grained cementitious composites using acoustic emission (AE) method. Cement pastes and mortars with different w/c ratios were manufactured and tested at the age of three days. The test specimens were subjected to the test intended for determination of the static modulus of elasticity in compression during which the acoustic responses of the material were continuously detected by the piezoelectric AE sensors. The test of the static modulus of elasticity is associated with the gradual formation of microcracks, which is followed by the release of energy in the form of elastic ultrasonic waves. The main objective of this measurements was to identify the amount of microcracks formed during the particular stages of the loading test. The total extent of damage was expressed based on parameters of acoustic emission signal, e.g. number of AE events, released AE energy and magnitude of AE amplitudes. It is expected that the performed experimental analysis will contribute to the extension of knowledge in the field of experimental determination of the deterioration mechanism in the internal structure of the cementitious materials in the early-age. Pilot results showed that the amount of microcracks formed in the preloading stages of the test affected the mechanism of the subsequent deterioration of the test specimens’ internal structure.
