Effect of Moisture on the Electrical Properties of Portland Cement-Based and Alkali-Activated Slag Mortars

  • Original language description

Application of novel functional or smart materials is gaining in importance in recent years. These materials bring new functionalities to ordinary structures such as self-sensing and self-heating properties, energy harvesting or electromagnetic shielding. In order to provide such properties, it is important to have sufficient electrical conductivity, which depends on many factors including ambient conditions such as temperature, relative humidity or water saturation. This paper deals with the effect of water saturation on the electrical properties of two different types of building materials: Portland cement-based and alkali-activated slag mortars. The properties were tested in terms of electrical resistivity measurement with various frequency of the alternating current. The results showed that resistivity decreased with increasing frequency having a significant drop between 1 and 10 kHz. Resistivity also decreased with increasing water saturation degree but at moisture level exceeding 30% the effect of moisture became almost negligible. Alkali-activated slag also showed more than ten times lower resistivity in comparison with Portland cement when the materials were completely dried.
