Effective Stress Intensity Factor for the Straight Crack Front with 3D-Ledges

  • Original language description

A stable crack growth during fracture toughness or fatigue tests often exhibits a discontinues features. As a typical example can serve the observation of individual intergranular ledges at fatigue pre-cracks on fracture surfaces of specimens subjected to stress corrosion cracking tests. It is clear that the existence of such ledges must influence local values of the stress intensity factor along the precrack front. Consequently, the standardly used stress intensity factor formulae for the straight crack front could yield values which might be significantly different from those existing along the real irregular crack front. It may cause an unreasonably big scatter of evaluated experimental data. The linking process of closely spaced small initial ledges can be the reason of oscillations observed on diagrams showing the dependence of the loading force vs. crack opening displacement.
