Evolution of Ideal Strength Calculations
Original language description
Current state and evolution of ideal strength calculations is presented in a form of a brief overview completed by a database of selected theoretical and experimental results. Basic prin-ciples of the advanced ideal strength analysis are elucidated by means of a schematic example. The importance of this analysis for understanding the materials fracture is demonstrated on the background of the crystal defects impact. Moreover, calculations of electronic structure from the first principles enable to use ideal strength as an important parameter for calibration of semi-empirical potentials applied for solving complex problems in physics of deformation and fracture on the atomic level. In this sense, there is an increasing demand for precise experi-mental measurements of ideal strength values supported also by the increasing consumption of whiskers and monocrystals in advanced materials and components.
