CORROSION FATIGUE OF PROCESS EQUIPMENTS
Original language description
Experience in operation of process equipment all round the world proves that most of the damage on pipes, nozzles, valve pieces and pumps is caused by fatigue. Much of this damage is linked to temperature loading, which leads to multiplication of layersor peel-off of the material; damage is also linked to mechanical loading caused by vibrations. Impact of the loading may be enhanced by corrosion since the material is exposed both to water and high temperatures. Fatigue cracks also appear on outlet pipes of various chemical reactors, at connection of inlet pipes with nozzles and steam devices [1]. These cracks may be explained by corrosion fatigue and stress induced corrosion fractures caused by cyclic loading due to distribution of temperature fieldsduring start up and close-down of operation units.
