The study of lubrication film formation under starved conditions
Original language description
Rolling elements are among the most common machine elements in use today. They must function correctly, often over prolonged periods. To maintain optimum performance over an acceptable time, lubrication is often necessary to minimize friction and wear through the formation of a low shear strength film separating the surfaces. In engineering practices, for the contacts of elastohydrodynamic lubrication, it often occurs that the available lubricant is not enough to fill the gap between the two contact surfaces such an oil supply condition is called oil starvation. Starvation occurs whenever there is a limited amount of lubricant available to the contact and in this case the film thickness can be much less than under fully flooded conditions. In these cases starvation arises because there is a limited amount of lubricant available in the track. At present the classical theories cannot be applied to predict film thickness and this represents a severe limitation for designers.
