Decomposition of the Swirling Flow Fields
Original language description
Paper presents application of the proper orthogonal decomposition method (POD) on the swirling flows. POD enables to extract the most energetic eigenmodes of pressure and velocity fields. CFD data from unsteady simulations serve as the input for POD. Presented methodology enables to study both spatial and temporal behavior of the eigenmodes, which is documented on an example of swirling flow in a draft tube. A new view of the swirling flow dynamics, complementary to current approaches, is obtained. Proper orthogonal decomposition identifies and ranks the modes according to their energy, therefore a simplified low dimensional model can be constructed and further analyzed.
