Dependence of Micro-Crack Propagation on Different Type of Non-Linear Matrix Used in Particulate Composite
Original language description
The role of rigid particles covered by interphase in fracture behavior of filled polymer was investigated with systems based on polypropylene (PP) matrix and rigid fillers. The connections of the influence of particle and interphase content on the micro-deformation mechanisms and fracture toughness of the composites were found. In this paper the composite was modeled as a three-phase continuum ? the matrix, particles and interphase. The non-linear matrix properties were estimated from experiment and were used in numerical calculations. Computations were done for a variety of material properties of the matrix and the interphase using the finite element commercial code ANSYS. The results show that the presence of interphase between particle and matrix can improve fracture toughness of polymer particle composite through debonding process. This work contributes to better understanding of the connection between stiffness and fracture toughness.
