Computational method for the simulation of grate combustion in general configuration
Original language description
The report describes a computational method for the simulation of grate combustion in general configuration. The method assumes the use of modern Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools combined with stand-alone user codes. Current CFD codes (both commercial and non-commercial) do not provide for user-friendly interfaces and functions for a general description and solution to thermal conversion of solid fuels, particularly municipal solid waste (MSW), in grate incinerators. The mathematical model of packed-bed combustion is described. Assuptions on overall modelling approach are also discussed. The main assumption is made upon the representation of the moving bed, which is based on a time-space transform of one-dimensional transient solutions of fixed-bed combustion. The algorithm for numerical solution is briefly described as well as the method of coupling computational models of bed and freeboard combustion.
