Computer Simulation of the Piston Ring Pack with Reflect to Lubricant Oil Consumption
Original language description
The current paper presents the results of a research work aimed for the computer simulation of all key mechanisms affecting the piston ring pack behavior, where key aspect is the lubricant oil consumption sourcing from the piston assembly. Benefits of the developed simulation tool is the inclusion of the corresponding flow factors into the hydrodynamics calculation, the real surface topography determination of the surface roughness for the asperity contact calculation and the included oil transport model for the instantaneous oil wetting calculation. Resulting from these mechanisms, the lubricant oil consumption is calculated from the sources affected by the piston ring pack, like the oil evaporation from the liner wall, the oil loss due to gas flow into the combustion chamber and the oil throw-off from the edge of the compression ring. Sample results are shown from the application of the developed simulation tool on a three cylinder passenger car petrol engine.
