Static and Dynamic Compression Performance of Lattice Structures Made by Selective Laser Melting
Original language description
Selective Laser Melting provides an opportunity to develop open cell lattice structures made of several types of metallic materials, such as aluminium alloys or stainless steels. This kind of porous structures is especially suitable for energy absorbing applications, where the impact energy is absorbed through progressive collapse of structured part. When the collapse mode occurs in lattice structure, properties like high specific energy absorption (energy absorbed/weight) and elongation at break are required. Therefore, this paper focuses on BCC lattice structure made of 316L stainless steel in as-build state, which is characterized by these properties. The main point of the interest is comparison of quasi-static and dynamic (drop-weight) compression behaviour of lattice structure specimens (20 x 20 x 20 mm). Loading behaviour of the structure is quantified by the amount of absorbed energy and compared by dynamic amplification factor. The results show that higher load rate causes increase of energy absorption for the test specimens.
