Development of the crank train of an in-line three-cylinder spark-ignition engine for a passenger car
Original language description
The crank train significantly affects vibration and friction losses of the internal-combustion engine. The paper describes the development of the crank train of an in-line three-cylinder naturally aspirated gasoline engine as a power unit for passenger cars. This crank train is not equipped with a balancing unit, therefore it uses a partial balancing of the primary moment of reciprocating parts by means of an intentionally unbalanced pulley and flywheel. The concept of the crank train is elaborated into three design variants differing in the diameters of the main, crank and piston pins and the arrangement of counterweights of the crankshaft. These variants are then compared in terms of bearing loads, torsional vibration and frictional losses, with the results based on dynamic simulations in the time domain in the Multi-Body System environment. All variants of the crank train are equipped with a rubber torsional vibration damper, which is represented in the simulations by a suitable rheological model.
