Study of transient events in pumping station before reconstruction
Original language description
The pumping station supplies water from the river to the reservoir, from where the water is further pumped into the technological operations of the power plant. The reservoir is placed 150 m above the river. When the pumps start or stop, the cone valve located on the discharge side open or close slowly. The pressure vessels with water and air protect the system against the hydraulic shock (water hammer). The article describes a numerical analysis of the possible replacement of cone valve with non-slam check valves (nozzle check valves), which are cheaper and have easier maintenance and better shock protection (water hammer protection system). There is a special attention paid to the pressure shocks during the transients. As the non-slam check valves do not allow controlled closing, any operational shutdown of the pumps is identical to a failure, and it can place higher demand on the entire system.
