Numerical simulation of liquid breakup on the pin packing of rotating packed bed

  • Original language description

A rotating packed bed is a device used to intensify the process of mass transfer between liquid and gas which became important in the use of this technology in the context with Carbon Capture and Storage processes. This paper deals with the numerical simulation of liquid breakup on outer area of pin packing which is part of rotating packed bed. Numerical simulations using computational fluid dynamics in combination with Eulerian - Volume of Fluid approach was performed. Due to the difficulty of this approach, 1/6 slice of packing in 2D was modelled. The simulations were focused on the analysis of liquid holdup and the characterization of the ligaments formed during water jet breakup on five rows of pins. The paper focuses on the comparison of these two approaches and the analysis of the main parameters characterizing the liquid breakdown inside the rotating packed bed. The comparison showed good agreement in terms of droplet velocity in radial direction and ligament formation after liquid dispersion o
