The Study of Dimple Phenomena in EHD Contacts
Original language description
New experimental technique based on a combination of chromatic interferometry and computer differential colorimetry was applied to the study of dimple phenomena in elastohydrodynamic point contacts. Elastohydrodynamic lubricant films were observed underboth disc and ball pure-sliding conditions with the help of a conventional optical test rig. It was confirmed that a deep conical depression appears in the contact area when the glass disc rotates and steel ball is kept stationary. On the other hand no such a dimple was observed under ball sliding conditions. Obtained results are presented in the form of the comparison of film thickness profiles. A grey scale interferogram and corresponding three-dimensional representation of EHD film shape depicting dimple phenomena is shown.
