Original language description
Switching systems developed for conventional voice or data networks are not directly applicable for the broadband system. Hence, a compromising switching technology, Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), had to be developed and adopted for broadband-based networks. Two major requirements impact the definition of broadband ATM switching systems: High-speed interfaces (50 Mbps to 2.4 Gbps) to the switch, with switching rates up to 80 Gbps in the backplane. Statistical capability of the ATM streams passing through the ATM switching system. To meet these requirements, the ATM switches had to be completely different from conventional switches. A large number of alternatives exist for ATM switches based on different factors. A generic ATM switch can be divided into two categories-Hardware architecture and Software architecture.
