Enthalpy probe study of the expanding thermal plasma jet (IF 0,194)

  • Original language description

Effect of reduction of ambient pressure on properties of thermal plasma jet was studied for pressure range of 100 kPa - 4 kPa. Plasma jet was generated by the DC torch with water-argon stabilization. Properties of the plasma jet were measured by enthalpyprobe TEKNA connected to mass spectrometer. Temperature and velocity fields within the jet were evaluated from the measured values. Variations of the chamber pressure between atmospheric and 20 kPa resulted in little changes of plasma jet parameters. Reeduction of the pressure below 20 kPa led to drastic velocity rise due to transition of the plasma flow from subsonic to supersonic. CCD camera images show the under-expanded character of the flow with hot exiting plume followed by the expansion. Dependences of the plasma jet characteristics on pressure, arc current and flow rate of plasma forming gas were studied.
