Electrochromic devices employing methacrylate-based polymer electrolytes

  • Original language description

Poly(ethyl methacrylate) PEMA and poly(2-ethoxyethyl methacrylate) PEOEMA based polymer gel electrolytes were successfully tested as ionic conductors in the electrochromic device FTO/WO3/Li+-electrolyte/V2O5/FTO. Polymer electrolytes containing entrappedsolutions of lithium perchlorate in propylene carbonate (PC) were prepared by direct, UV initiated polymerization and exhibit good ionic conductivity (up to 0.7 mS/cm at 20 C) and broad accessible potential window on gold or glassy carbon electrode (4.5- 4.9 V), thus up to 4.9 - 5.1 V vs. Li/Li+. Electrolytes are long-term and thermally stable up to 130 C. The assembled electrochromic device was studied using coupled spectro-electrochemical methods to discuss the relationship between the electrolyte composition and the parameters as colour contrast, response time and stability. The transmission modulation T was found to be 30 - 45 % at 634 nm.
