Optimizing Link Layer of Terrestrial FSO Links Using Channel Reciprocity
Original language description
The paper deals with a study of data transmission on terrestrial FSO links with transmitter blocking during fades. Due to the effect of atmospheric turbulence the optical channel is characterized by received power fades in the order of tens of milliseconds, during which the sent data is lost. Under certain conditions the optical propagation through atmospheric turbulence is reciprocal, i.e. the power fluctuation in forward and backward channels is highly correlated. The paper deals with a model for generating correlated and colored lognormal time series for time-domain link-layer simulation. The model is used for a parametric study of performance of FSO terminals whose link layer includes transmission blocking during deep fades. During a fade the incoming data is stored in a FIFO buffer and transmitted when the link becomes operational again.
