The Influence of Ripple Control Signal on Protection Relay Operation
Original language description
A ripple control system is a form of load management used in many countries. It enables to remotely control devices using a high-frequency signal (usually between 100 – 1600 Hz) superimposed onto the fundamental frequency of the power system. Since the distance protection evaluates the fault distance using the fundamental voltages and currents, an error can occur if the analyzed signal contains a higher level of inter-harmonics. This paper describes the impact of inter-harmonic distortion on the fault location. The power system network is modeled utilizing the PSCAD software and the simulation outputs are used to test the distance protection. In the model, the ripple control source with frequencies of 183.3 Hz and 216.6 Hz is used. The performed tests show that the distance protection ability to locate the fault is not significantly influenced by the ripple control signal.
