Animation of Electric Arc in High-Power Circuit Breaker
Original language description
Transition of the circuit breaker contacts from closed to open position is accompanied by the formation of an electric arc (switching arc) between the contacts. A reliable function of the circuit breaker depends on several factors, the most important ofwhich include: mechanical resistance of the individual components, circumstances of the switching arc extinction and the associated recovery of the dielectric strength of the medium between the circuit breaker contacts. The aerodynamic relations in the quenching chamber, the direct measurement of which is hardly feasible using contemporary techniques, have also a great influence on the switching process. Therefore the shape of the arc plasma burning between the circuit breaker contacts is scanned withahigh-speed camera. The switching arc in the quenching chamber is simultaneously photographed from two fixed rectangular directions and computationally reconstructed and visualized in 3D.
