Bacterial production of polyhydroxyalkanoates-biodegradable alternative to petrochemical plastics
Original language description
Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) are a group of hydroxyacids polyesters that are accumulated in a form of intracellular granules by a wide variety of bacterial strains. Bacteria use PHA as carbon, energy and reducing power storage materials. Because of theirmechanical properties similar to those of traditional petrochemical plastics such as polypropylene or polyethylene and their biodegradability and biocompatibility, PHA are considered to be an environmental-friendly alternative to common plastics in manyapplications in industry, agriculture and medicine as well. Nevertheless, the production cost of PHA is the main factor that prevents their broader use.
