Plasma discharge in a methane nitrogen gas mixture
Original language description
The formation of products produced in plasma discharge fed by a N2-CH4 gas mixture has been studied using a Gas Chromatography with Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). Acetylene, hydrogen cyanide, and acetonitrile were found to be the major products of such a discharge. Minor products detected were: ethane, ethene, cyanogens, propene, propane, propyne, propadiene, butenyene, butadiene, butadiyne, 2-propenenitrile, 2-propennitril, benzene, and toluene. Many of these compounds have either been seen or are predicted to be in Titan's atmosphere. These molecules could be precursors of more complex molecular structures that ultimately lead to the formation of tholins.
