Ethanol production from waste paper using immobilized Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells
Original language description
Ethanol is becoming an important alternative fuel nowadays. For its production, there are efforts made to utilize sources that are cheap and do not compete with food. Some lignocellulosic materials, among which waste paper belongs, fulfill these conditions. Paper has to be hydrolyzed to fermentable sugars first. For hydrolysis the intention was to use yeasts with cellulolytic activity. After screening, chosen yeasts were tested for cellulolytic enzymes production but according to results they were not suitable for hydrolysis of paper and therefore commercial enzymatic preparation was used. The hydrolysis and fermentation to ethanol were performed in one step by the method called simultaneous sacharification and fermentation (SSF). For fermentation yeasts Saccharomyces cerevisiae immobilized into the carrier from plyvinylalcohol by technology Lentikat's were used. The aim of the work was to optimize conditions of SSF - the enzyme and substrate dosage, the addition of nutrients - and to
