On the role of humic acids'carboxyl groups in binding charged organic compounds

  • Original language description

Effects of interactions with lignitic humic acids (HAs) on the mobility of charged organic dyes (Methylene Blue and Rhodamine 6G) were investigated in the presented work. For this purpose, combination of simple diffusion experiments with the batch sorption study was performed. An involvement of HAs' carboxylic groups in these interactions was evaluated by comparing the immobilizing effects of non-modified HAs and of the same material with selectively methylated carboxyls. The results of the diffusion experiments indicate surprisingly little influence of methylation on the immobilizing power of HAs. This finding supports the hypothesis that the mechanism of interactions between acidic constituents of natural organic matter and oppositely charged amphiphilic compounds is much more complex than the simple electrostatic attraction.
